The important role of Law Firms in a cyber attack

As one of the keynotes at LawFest, Carl Woerndle shares his experience of the cyber attack that destroyed his business. In two weeks he lost a business that had taken over 10 years to build up. His company Distribute IT, an IT company with a solid reputation, was the target of an attack so severe the business could no longer operate and was forced into liquidation. The result was devastating for an organisation who prided themselves on risk management, up-time, customer service and their security posture.

Carl will provide a very frank and personal account of his experience, but more importantly, highlight how law firms can be prepared themselves, but also to advise their clients.

As a Trusted advisor, a client will often call their lawyer first when going through a Cyber incident.  The role of the lawyer can be critical as to how an organisation manages & recovers from a Cyber incident.  The question is, how will you deal with the call when it comes?

The opportunity for law firms in Cyber starts well before a client experiences an incident.  Organisations need a well planned and tested response plan and most of the plan relates not to the IT response but the broader business response & this is where Law firms can assist.  From reviewing and managing third party supplier contracts to preparing for legal & Insurance fallout.  Many Law firms can assist with communications plans & HR issues as well. Being part of the response planning ensures you are part of the response team when an incident occurs.

Having the conversation with your client about incident response not only provides an opportunity for you but will, more importantly, ensure that your clients are ready for what can be a devastating event for their business when that inevitable event arises.

You can hear the not to be missed insights of Carl Woerndle, together with our other exciting speakers at LawFest on the 17th of May.
